What is a Marriage and Family Therapist?
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are licensed mental health professionals who work with individuals; couples whether or not married; families of all types; and groups to cure or relieve mental, emotional, and relational concerns of all kinds. MFTs work in a variety of settings throughout the country and provide mental health services, as well as provide services in independent private practice.
Who do you work with?
I work with adults, couples and families.
How do you work? And what is Somatics?
Every clients needs are different. I work collaboratively with you to understand what would be most helpful. I come from an understanding of a holistic approach, integrating body, mind, and spirit. Sometimes just understanding something does not lead to change. Many can understand something and talk about it fully but somehow the experience doesn’t change. This is where I believe somatics can be helpful in our work together. Somatic work is a great way to get out of the mind and into the body, really tuning into what you truly want and desire. It can be a profound way to integrate the body and the mind and give a deeper understanding of what motivates you.
What to expect?
We will first do an intake interview via phone that usually takes about 10-15 minutes. If I think I can be helpful to you, we will set up an initial appointment. At that time, you get to decide if I am a good fit for you. In our first session we will talk about what you expect out of therapy and what brought you in. I will also be happy to answer whatever questions you might have. This will give you a sense of how you feel talking to me. If for whatever reason it doesn’t feel like a good fit for you, I would happy to provide you with some referrals so you can find the right therapist for you.
How will I know if we are a good fit and you can help me?
That is certainly a very important question. After our initial telephone intake interview I will let you know if I think I can help you. If you agree, we will then make an initial appointment. You get to meet me and see how it feels for you. Finding someone you feel comfortable with is very important.
How long will it take before I feel better?
This is different for everyone. Each person has their own process when it comes to therapy and moves and integrates at a different pace. Some of our work together could last for a few weeks, months or a few years.
