Should You Try Individual Therapy Before Couples Therapy?
When a relationship is struggling, deciding what type of support to seek can feel confusing. Some people wonder whether they should begin individual therapy before starting couples therapy. Others worry that working individually means their partner is being blamed for the relationship problems.
The answer depends on what is happening.
Couples therapy focuses on the relationship itself. A therapist helps both partners better understand their patterns, improve communication, navigate conflict, and strengthen emotional connection. The goal is generally not to determine who is right or wrong, but to better understand the cycle the couple has created together.
However, there are times when individual therapy can be especially helpful.
For example, you may benefit from individual therapy if you’re trying to better understand your own emotional reactions, relationship history, attachment patterns, anxiety, depression, or difficulty with boundaries. Individual therapy can provide a private space to explore experiences that may be influencing how you show up in relationships.
Sometimes one partner is ready for therapy while the other isn’t. Beginning individual therapy can still be a meaningful step. It may help you gain clarity about your needs and identify changes you want to make, regardless of whether your partner is currently ready to participate.
Individual therapy may also be appropriate when someone is dealing with significant personal concerns that need focused attention outside of the couple’s relationship.
That said, you don’t necessarily have to “fix yourself” before couples therapy. Relationship difficulties are rarely created by one person alone, and waiting until both partners feel completely ready or emotionally healthy can mean waiting indefinitely.
For many couples, the most helpful approach is to work directly on the relationship together. For others, individual and couples therapy may both be beneficial at different points in time.
The best starting point is often an honest conversation with a therapist about what you’re experiencing and what you hope will change.
