Am I Avoiding My Feelings? How Emotional Avoidance Can Keep You Stuc
Most people avoid difficult emotions sometimes. You might distract yourself after a painful experience, stay busy when you’re stressed, or tell yourself you don’t have time to deal with how you really feel.
These responses can make sense in the moment.
But when avoiding difficult emotions becomes your primary way of coping, the feelings you’re trying not to experience often continue affecting you in other ways.
Emotional avoidance can look different from person to person. Some people stay constantly busy. Others use humor to change the subject whenever conversations become vulnerable. You might intellectualize everything, telling yourself why you “shouldn’t” feel a certain way instead of allowing yourself to experience it.
In relationships, emotional avoidance can make it difficult to communicate needs, tolerate conflict, or allow someone to get close. You may pull away when emotions become intense or avoid conversations because you’re afraid of what you might feel.
The goal isn’t to force yourself to feel every emotion all at once. Therapy can help you approach difficult feelings at a pace that feels manageable and safe.
Often, emotions are giving us information. Anxiety may signal that something feels uncertain or threatening. Anger may point to a boundary that has been crossed. Sadness may reflect loss or disappointment.
When we immediately push feelings away, we can miss the opportunity to understand what they are trying to communicate.
Therapy offers a supportive space to become more curious about your emotional experiences without judging yourself for having them. Over time, you can learn that difficult feelings are uncomfortable without necessarily being dangerous—and that you are capable of experiencing them without being controlled by them.
You don’t have to avoid your inner experience to keep moving forward. Sometimes moving forward begins by slowing down long enough to understand what you’ve been carrying.
