Can't stop overthinking? Counseling in New York

Why Can’t I Stop Overthinking Everything?

Have you ever replayed a conversation for hours, wondering whether you said the wrong thing? Or spent so much time trying to make the “right” decision that making any decision at all became stressful?

Overthinking can feel like problem-solving, but there is an important difference between thoughtfully considering something and becoming trapped in repetitive thoughts that don’t lead anywhere.

When you’re anxious, your brain may try to protect you by looking for potential problems. You may analyze every possible outcome, search for reassurance, or repeatedly revisit the past in hopes of finding something you missed.

The problem is that overthinking rarely creates the certainty it’s trying to achieve.

Instead, it can leave you feeling more anxious and less confident in your ability to handle uncertainty. The more you analyze a situation, the more possibilities you may find to worry about.

Overthinking can also show up in relationships. You might wonder what your partner’s text really meant, assume someone is upset with you, or repeatedly question whether you’ve made the right choices.

For many people, overthinking is connected to anxiety, perfectionism, fear of making mistakes, or a desire to feel in control. Understanding the purpose behind the pattern can be an important part of changing it.

Therapy can help you become more aware of when you’re caught in an unproductive thought cycle and develop different ways of responding. Rather than trying to eliminate every difficult thought, the goal may be to build greater tolerance for uncertainty and more trust in your ability to cope.

You don’t need perfect certainty before you can move forward. Sometimes growth means learning that you can make a thoughtful decision, tolerate not knowing everything, and adjust if life doesn’t unfold exactly as planned.
